Ants
Ants live in colonies, with nests in soil, under paving, in wall cavities and in timber. Common signs are trails along benches, walls and floors, ants around food and sweet spills, and small piles of soil near paving edges.
A trail you can see is usually only part of the colony. If they keep coming back, it is worth having a licensed professional look at it.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches stay hidden during the day and come out at night, so seeing one in daylight can mean there are more nearby. Signs include small dark droppings, egg cases, a musty smell and the odd live one in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries.
They can spread germs across food and surfaces, which is why it is worth getting them looked at early.
Spiders
Most spiders around the home are harmless, but a few Australian species can give a painful or dangerous bite. Signs include webs in corners, eaves, sheds and around windows, and spiders turning up indoors.
If you are not sure what you are dealing with, it is worth having it checked rather than guessing.
Termites
Termites eat timber from the inside and can be active for a long time before anyone notices. Signs include mud tubes on walls or foundations, timber that sounds hollow when tapped, and damaged skirting boards or door frames.
If you suspect termite activity, it is worth having a licensed professional look at it.
